MOLINE – The Carthage College bowling team battled through a competitive field at the Viking Classic, finishing in seventh place with a 3-4 record and a total pinfall of 5,595. The two-day tournament, hosted by Augustana College, featured eight teams, including strong regional opponents.
The Firebirds opened the tournament with an impressive 889-503 victory over Illinois Wesleyan. Led by standout performances from Jessica Rosa (192), Maxine Lathrop (188), and Emma Winter (200), Carthage set the tone early with its highest traditional game score of the weekend.
Despite a strong showing, Carthage faced stiff competition in the following matches. The Firebirds posted an 843 score against Augustana but came up short, then registered an 809 against Lewis before falling to the Flyers. Rosa remained a key contributor, adding a 177 and 155 in her later games, while Isabel Gonzalez and Airie Frost turned in strong performances.
Carthage opened Sunday with a bounce-back win over Rockford, tallying a 778-775 victory in a closely contested match. The Firebirds then faced Aurora, pushing their opponent but ultimately falling 917-778.
The tournament wrapped up with best-of-seven Baker matches for final placement. Carthage was pitted against Rockford in the seventh-place match, securing the win to claim the spot.
Jessica Rosa led the team with consistent scoring throughout the weekend, highlighted by a high game of 203. Gonzales contributed with a weekend-best 188, while Frost posted a strong 204 in one of her early matches. Winter also delivered a solid 200 performance, helping Carthage stay competitive in key moments.
