Firebirds Bounce Back with Road Win Over Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. - On Saturday, the Carthage women's basketball team defeated the Elmhurst Blue Jays 80-56 in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) matchup for their second conference win of the season.

How it Happened
  • The Firebirds got off to a quick offensive start, going on a 12--0 run with four minutes remaining in the first.
  • Carthage's Marianna Morrisey went on a six-point run for the Firebirds. 
  • After holding the Blue Jays to five points, the Firebirds led 22-5 going into the second quarter. 
  • A good three-pointer by Lauren Knight with six minutes left maintained the Firebirds double-digit lead, 31-10, over the BlueJays.
  • A pair of free-throws in the final seconds solidified Carthage's 45-17 lead over Elmhurst to end the first half. 
  • Grace Cord kicked off the third period for the Firebirds with a good jumper, increasing Carthage's lead to 47-20.
  • An offensive effort from Emma Thistle in the final second of the third, solidified the Firebirds 67-43  lead going into the final period. 
  • The Firebirds had a strong offensive performance in the fourth quarter, securing a 80-56 win over Elmhurst.
High Flyers Coachs Remarks
"We were focused on us today, playing as hard as we could and playing together. I thought we had some really great moments to build on. We got a little sloppy at the end and had too many turnovers that we need to clean up but overall it feels good to get back in the win column."
