Firebirds Open '23-'24 Season with 71-34 Road Win Over Lakeland

PLYMOUTH, Wis. - The Carthage women's basketball team defeated Lakeland 71-34 to open the 2023-2024 regular season. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Carthage 71 - Lakeland 34

How it Happened
  • The Firebirds kicked off the first quarter with a strong offensive performance, securing a 10 point lead, 12-2, in the first five minutes of play. 
  • With a good free throw from Emma Thistle, the Firebirds led 16-2 going into the second quarter.
  • Carthage continued to build off of the offensive momentum, and a three-point shot from Malia Green to put them ahead 29-6 with five minutes left in the quarter.
  • After two made free throws from Alyssa Orozco and a layup from Green, the Firebird led 38-12 at halftime. 
  • Carthage started off the third quarter with a quick layup by Marianna Morrissey in the first minute of play to extend the lead to 40-12. 
  • The Firebirds held onto their 25-plus-point margin, with a layup by Grace Wamser to end the third quarter leading 61-29.
  • A three-pointer by Lauren Knight in the game's final two minutes sealed the win for the Firebirds.
  • Carthage defeated Lakeland 71-34.
