APPLETON, Wis. - The Carthage women's basketball team defeated Lawrence 71-54 in a regular season match-up.

The Firebirds got off to a quick offensive start, taking a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes of play.
As the first quarter progressed, the Firebirds found themselves tied 12-12 with 2:45 to go.
A good free-throw by Mariana Morrissey gave Carthage the lead, 12-12, heading into the second quarter.
The Firebirds extended their lead by six, with a layup by Elena Knebel to put Carthage ahead 25-19.
A pair of good free throws by Emma Thistle in the final seconds of the second quarter, ended with Carthage leading 36-23 at half.
After a back-and-forth, the Firebirds lead diminished to seven points, 45-38, with three minutes left.
Good free throw shooting by Marianna Morrissey and Alyssa Orozco in the final minute of the third quarter gave Carthage a 58-40 lead over Lawrence.
The Firebirds maintained their double-digit lead throughout the fourth, up 67-54 with two minutes left.

Marianna Morrissey led the Firebirds with 21 points and five rebounds, while Addison Ebeling added 13 points and three rebounds to the win.
Grace Cord and Margueret Spear contributed seven rebounds while Alyssa Orozco and Lauren Knight each added eight points to the offensive effort

"We're happy with the adjustments we made from Game 1 to today. We valued possessions and stayed composed when they made some runs.
