Firebirds Secure Double-Digit Win Over Wheaton at Home

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage women's basketball team defeated Wheaton (Ill.) 77-37 in the opening game of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) portion of the 2023-24 schedule.

How it Happened
  • The Firebirds started off the first quarter with team basketball, with every play having a perfect assist creating an early lead for Carthage.
  • Carthage controlled the tempo with a lock down full-court defense, even forcing a 10-second violation and ending the first quarter up 21-9. 
  • The Firebirds started the second quarter with a strong offensive surge, going on a five-point run, with scores from Marianna Morrissey, and Addison Ebeling
  • The Firebirds were unstoppable with Margueret Spear hitting two back-to-back threes. To finish off the first half, Gace Cord finished at the rim with an assist from Spear, doubling their lead over the Thunder, 39-18. 
  • At the start of the third, Lauren Knight hit a three-pointer, followed by Marianna Morrissey who converted a steal to a layup to extend the Carthage lead even further. 
  • Cord finished out the third quarter with another layup, putting Carthage up 59-24 heading into the final ten minute period. 
  • Carthage maintained their lead in the fourth and earned the victory with a final score of 77-37.

  • Carthage will play Augustana (Ill.) in their second CCIW game on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. at Tarble Arena, Kenosha, Wis.
