Cord Scores Career High as Firebirds Fall to Maroons

#22 UChicago 79, Carthage 62
KENOSHA, Wis. -
The Carthage women's basketball team hosted the no. 22 University of Chicago Maroons on Saturday afternoon in Tarble Arena. Both teams entered the game looking to avoid their first loss of the season. After a tight first half, the Maroons used a hot third quarter to pull ahead and defeat the Firebirds 79-62.

How it Happened

The Firebirds got off to a quick start in the opening quarter, jumping out to a 12-5 lead in the opening four minutes. The Maroons found their stride shortly after, out-scoring Carthage 13-4 to close out the quarter and lead 18-16. Freshman Grace Cord led the Firebirds with six points in the first quarter.

It was scoreless for nearly two minutes to open the second quarter before UChicago broke the silence with a pull-up three pointer to increase the lead to five points. The Firebirds continued to run the offense through Cord, who registered nine more points in the second quarter. Despite Cord's offensive success, the Firebirds were outscored in the second 18-13 to extend the Maroons lead to 36-29 heading into halftime.

The third quarter belonged to the Maroons, who shot 64 percent from the field and 62 percent from behind the three-point line in the period and outscored the Firebirds 31-17 to extend the lead to 21 points heading into the fourth quarter. Juniors Elena Knebel and Emma Thistle led the Firebirds with four points each in the quarter.

The Firebirds found the hot hand from three-point land in the fourth quarter with Thistle, as well as seniors Lauren Knight and Margueret Spear, drilling a combined five three-pointers in the quarter. Despite the late run, it was too little too late for the Firebirds, who would drop their first loss of the season.

  • Knight finished the day with 14 points, four rebounds, and an assist
