Carthage Men’s Volleyball Splits Second Day at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio.  — The No. 1 Carthage College men's volleyball fell to No. 9 Messiah in the opening game of the day before beating hosts Wittenberg 3-0. 

The Basics

How it Happened 
 
  • During the day's first game, Carthage started with a 6-2 lead off back-to-back errors. 
  • A kill from Carter Schmidt made it 16-12. 
  • After the Falcons cut the lead to two, a service error and an ace from Mitch Geiger gave Carthage a 22-18 advantage. 
  • Back-to-back kills from Zach Bulthuis, and Schmidt pushed the first to set point; however, a 7-2 run for Messiah won it 28-26. 
  • The Falcons controlled a 17-10 score in the second until a kill from Kyle Radecki and an ace from Gene McNulty cut it to four. 
  • The Firebirds rallied, tying the second at 21 with three-straight attack errors. 
  • Though a kill from Schmidt made it 24-22, the Falcons collected the final point of the set. 
  • Messiah controlled a 15-12 gap in the third. 
  • Carthage used a kill from Bulthuis and a Falcons attack error to change the lead to 20-17. 
  • Although Carthage held Messiah at set point, the Falcons won the match 25-22. 
 
  • Game two saw the Firebirds go ahead in the first with a kill from David Markes
  • Wittenberg kept close with Carthage until kills from Markes and McNulty and a block from Bulthuis and Schmidt saw the visitors go up four. 
  • Later a kill from Drew Jansen extended the margin to 22-18 as Carthage won the first with a Markes kill. 
  • In the second, kills from Markes and McNulty allowed Carthage to go up 12-9. 
  • After the home team got within three, a 6-1 run for the Firebirds moved the lead to 20-12. 
  • A combined block from Jansen and Markes handed Carthage a two-set lead 25-17. 
  • With momentum on their side, two-consecutive kills from Markes and Schmidt put the visitors up five. 
  • Carthage closed the match with four unanswered points to win 25-18.
