No. 6 Firebirds Win Over No. 10 UC Santa Cruz in Five Sets

KENOSHA, Wis.  — Returning home for the first time since January 20, the No. 6 ranked Carthage College men's volleyball team defeated No. 10 UC Santa Cruz 3-2 on Thursday evening. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Carthage 3 - UC Santa Cruz 2
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena 
  • Records: No. 6 Carthage 4-3 - No. 10 UC Santa Cruz 7-2

How it Happened 
  • The Firebirds and Banana Slugs started the match trading point-for-point until a kill from Drew Jansen put the home team up one. 
  • An Ace from Jansen saw the Firebirds take a two-point margin at 11-8. 
  • Back-to-back attack errors from Santa Cruz, ranked No. 10 in week four National Volleyball Association and American Volleyball Coaches Association (NVA/AVCA) coaches poll, raised the score 18-12 in favor of the Firebirds. 
  • Carthage, picked No. 6 in the NVA/AVCA coaches poll, cruised to win the first set, winning 25-17. 
  • A six-point run from the Firebirds gave them a 12-4 score in the second set. 
  • After letting the Banana Slugs rattle off four points, Carthage brought the second set to a close with a kill from Carter Schmidt, 25-15.
  • Santa Cruz came into the third set with a strong offensive front battling with Carthage point-for-point.  
  • Back-to-back attack errors for both teams continued to keep the score even at 11.  
  • UC Santa Cruz responded going point-for-point again as a kill from Justin Girodat tied the score at 22. 
  • With a score of 25-25, neither team could gain the advantage until a kill for the Banana Slugs and a Firebirds attack error won it for Santa Cruz 31-29. 
  • Following a five-point deficit, the Firebirds made it a three-point deficit off back-to-back attack errors. 
  • With two-consecutive kills from Schmidt, the Firebirds kept it at a two-point score. 
  • The Firebirds fought throughout the rest of the fourth but could not take the set from UC Santa Cruz as the Banana Slugs won 25-19, forcing a fifth set. 
  • In the final set between the Firebirds and the Banana Slugs, Carthage started the rally with another kill from Schmidt. 
  • Although the visitors went ahead 9-6, four straight points from the Firebirds flipped the score to 10-9, sparked by a kill from Kyle Radecki and an ace from Zach Bulthuis
  • The Firebirds regained momentum with three kills from Jansen, Schmidt, and David Markes
  • A final kill from Schmidt ended the match 15-12. 

High Flyers
  • Carter Schmidt and Drew Jansen had double-digit kills on the day finishing with 16 and 12, respectively. 
  • Zach Bulthuis led the Firebirds in two categories: aces (2) and total blocks (8). 
  • Gene McNulty registered 49 assists pushing his career total to 1853. 
  • Drew Jansen led the Firebirds in digs with nine as the Carthage defense had 16 blocks.
