Firebirds Clipped by Eagles 3-2 at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio.  — The No. 1 Carthage College men's volleyball kicked off their three-game stint at Wittenberg falling in close competition with No. 4 Juniata 3-2 on Friday night. 

The Basics
 
  • Final score: Juniata 3 - Carthage 2
  • Location: Springfield, Ohio - Pam Evans Smith Arena
  • Records: No. 4 Juniata 4-0, No. 1 Carthage 2-2


How it Happened 
 
  • Set one saw the Firebirds start with an 11-7 lead over Juniata off a kill from David Markes
  • After the Eagles made it 18-14, Zach Bulthuis connected on a kill, putting Carthage ahead by five. 
  • A late push for Juniata shrank the lead to one; however, the Firebirds closed out the set with two kills from Markes and Carter Schmidt and a solo block from Bulthuis 25-22. 
  • Both teams traded point for point in the second until the Eagles went in front 14-11. 
  • A Kyle Radecki kill made it a three-point set, but Juniata took the set 25-21. 
  • Through most of the third, it was close as another kill from Markes tied it at 16. 
  • Later, back-to-back kills from Schmidt and Markes moved the score to 23-22 in favor of the Firebirds. 
  • The Eagles battled back to win the set scoring the final three points 25-23. 
  • Three-straight kills from Schmidt and Radecki propelled Carthage in front 8-2 in the fourth. 
  • Bulthuis connected on another kill making it 20-14 as the Firebirds forced a fifth set 25-18. 
  • In the fifth, Mitch Geiger struck a kill shrinking the Eagles lead to 7-6. 
  • Juniata jumped forward 11-8 with a kill until a block from Bulthuis and Schmidt cut the margin to one. 
  • Though a kill from Markes tied it at 13, the Eagles collected the final two points to win the match.
