No. 1 Carthage Takes 3-2 Win over No. 15 NYU

KENOSHA, Wis.  — The No. 1 Carthage College men's volleyball team defeated No. 15 NYU on Friday for their second-straight win of the season. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Carthage 3 - NYU 2
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena
  • Records: Carthage 2-1, NYU 0-1

How it Happened 
 
  • The Firebirds started the match with a fast 7-2 margin off back-to-back kills from David Markes and Drew Jansen
  • After NYU got it to two, Carthage pushed the lead to five with an ace from Kyle Radecki
  • Later a combined block from Zach Bulthuis and Radecki made it 21-14 as the home team won the first 25-20. 
  • The Violets turned the tables in the second, going ahead 7-3. 
  • Although the visitors went in front 16-12, Carthage rattled off four-straight points tying the second at 16. 
  • Carthage shrank the lead to 21-19 with a kill from Radecki; however, NYU won the set 25-21. 
  • The Firebirds jumped to a 12-7 score with a block from David Markes and Mitch Geiger
  • Carthage closed out the set outsourcing their opponents 13-7 as a block from Markes and Gene McNulty, and a Violets service error won the set for the Firebirds. 
  • With the scoreboard locked at 11 in the fourth, a quick 5-3 run capped off by a kill from Bulthuis made it 16-13. 
  • NYU responded, tying it at 20 and going ahead by two off a service and attack error. 
  • The Violets forced a fifth with a closing kill. 
  • In the fifth, a block from Markes and Ryan Cholewinski put the Firebirds in control 8-6. 
  • Although NYU cut the deficit to one, a kill from Bulthuis and an ace from Joe Kolwicz won it 15-11. 

High Flyers
  • David Markes led the Firebirds in three different categories: kills (10), aces (4), and blocks (6). 
  • Kyle Radecki followed closely with nine kills and two aces. 
  • Zach Bulthuis added eight kills and three blocks. 
  • Drew Jansen tallied four blocks and two aces. 
  • Gene McNulty registered 35 assists in the match, moving his career total to 1,702, which is fourth in the record books for Career assists.
