Firebirds Fall Short in CCIW Contest with North Central

KENOSHA, Wis.  — The Carthage College men's basketball team kept close with North Central (Ill.) but fell 77-67 on Wednesday night at Tarble Arena. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Wheaton (Ill.) 76 - Carthage 70
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena
  • Records: North Central (Ill.) 10-6 (5-3 CCIW), Carthage 12-4 (5-3 CCIW)

How it Happened 
 
  • The Firebirds started the night with 10 straight points from Antuan Nesbitt, taking a 10-4 margin. 
  • After North Central (Ill.) flipped the score to 23-19, Carthage responded with a three-pointer from AJ Johnson
  • Although the Cardinals pushed their lead to eight, another long-range three from Johnson made it a five-point game. 
  • North Central (Ill.) went into halftime ahead 35-27. 
  • Carthage came back in the second half, shrinking the deficit to four with a layup from Anthony Bernero
  • The visitors responded, moving the score to 58-44 before Carthage whittled the lead to five off a pair of free throws from Tanner Lamb
  • Later, a dunk from Nesbitt made it 68-62 with 4:10 remaining. 
  • Carthage got as close as six before North Central (Ill.) pulled away for the victory in the closing minutes.
