HOUSTON, Tx. — Carthage women's golf wrapped up their season this Thursday afternoon following the third round of play in the NCAA DIII Women's Golf Championship in Houston, Tx. The Firebirds ended all three days of competition in 18th of 29, shooting 328 on Thursday to combine for 978 (+114) over 54 holes of golf.
The top fifteen teams will advance further into the Championship tournament, led by Emory University in first with 879 (+15).
WGCA All-Great Lakes Regional Team selection and senior Kate Munro led the Firebird scorecard throughout the tournament, shooting mutual 78's in her first two rounds followed by an 82 (+10) today. Munro finished just 22 over par (238 +22) for the tournament.
Lorelei Oomens, Madi McCoy, and fellow WGCA selection Adrienne Rohwedder all shot mutual scores of 249 (+33) for the event. Alina Brindza rounded out Carthage's scorecard with 263 (+47).
Head Coach Brandy Johnston:
"While this wasn't the end to the season we were hoping for, the opportunity to compete at the highest level was truly something special! At the end of the day, we had a few too many big number holes this week, and it prevented us from scoring like we've shown we're capable of. This team should hold their heads high though, as they have so much to be proud of this season! They've proven themselves to be the best women's golf team we've ever had here at Carthage - setting new school records in every team scoring category including a new season scoring average record of 313.04, and setting two new CCIW records on their way to their 2nd CCIW title in 3 years.
We couldn't have done all of this without our two seniors Madi McCoy and Kate Munro. Both players have had incredible careers at Carthage, and will leave here with career scoring averages that rank them in the Top 5 all-time. They'll be missed for reasons well beyond golf scores next year and I can't say enough how lucky I've been to coach them for the past three years."
The Firebirds won their eighth conference championship this past October, giving them the bid to play in this weekend's Championship in what was their first appearance since 2015.
