Firebirds Start Conference Play with Home win Over North Central

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College women's lacrosse team picked up their first the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) win of the season and 10th overall with a 19-5 victory over North Central (Ill.) on Wednesday.

Rachel Harris scored first for Carthage (10-1, 1-0 CCIW) before the Cardinals (2-9, 0-1 CCIW) tied it at one. The Firebirds scored five unanswered goals making it 6-1, going to the second quarter.

Margaux Giacotto put in two-straight goals giving the Firebirds an 8-1 margin. Though North Central (Ill.) tallied another goal, four goals for the Firebirds saw the score extend to 12-2, heading to the intermission break.

In the third, Hanna Holloway got the scoring going until two goals for the Cardinals shrank the deficit to 13-4. Carthage then netted six unanswered goals as the home team won 19-5.

Up next, Carthage stays at home facing Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday, April 3 at 3 p.m.

Head Coach John Sung

"I'm really happy with how our defense played today with only allowing 13 shots and five goals. They really locked it down on them which I was pretty excited about. Again, our offense played well with six goals in the first and second. Then in the second half shooting about 50 percent, I really challenged them at halftime to do that. Hanna Holloway had a good seven points for us, and Rachel Harris had nine points and six assists. She played with her head up today. I think we got a lot of momentum going into our game against River Falls. I think it will be a good test for us. We'll kind of know what we are made out of, I think they are undefeated to this point. If we can just be prepared and get ourselves together, we should be ready for Saturday."
