Firebirds Comeback to Win against Wisconsin-River Falls at Home

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College women's lacrosse team picked up their 11th straight victory on the season defeating Wisconsin-River Falls 9-8 on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.

Wisconsin River-Falls (9-1) got on the board first with three goals to open the first. At the 4:14 mark, the Falcons tacked on another goal moving the score to 4-0 until Maddie Berni scored her 37th goal of the season, cutting the margin to three.

The Firebirds (11-1) responded with two goals from Rachel Harris and Elizabeth Oda making it 4-3 in the second. Wisconsin-River Falls got one back scoring at the 6:56 mark until a free position goal from Harris with 52 seconds left in the half made it a 5-4 score heading to the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the visitors extended the lead to 6-4 off a free position goal. Margaux Giacotto cut the lead to one with a goal, then two unanswered goals from Harris put the home team out in front 7-6 with 4:52 remaining. Wisconsin-River Falls quickly retaliated tying it 21 seconds later as both teams headed to the last quarter squared at seven.

Carthage reclaimed the lead to start the fourth with a goal from Oda. A little over a minute later, the Firebird lead doubled as Berni scored with 12:41 left. With 5:19 remaining the Falcons tallied another goal cutting the lead to one. Though Wisconsin-River Falls had a free position attempt, and a shot hit the post but the Carthage defense held on to win 9-8.

Up next, the Firebirds continue conference play facing Elmhurst on the road on Wednesday, April 13 at 6 p.m.

Head Coach John Sung

"I'm really excited about how we played. Thank you to the fans who came out today, it was awesome! It was an awesome environment for our girls to be a part of. The fans helped us power though when we were down. The crowd got us going as we kept chipping away. Obviously with senior day, a little bit of emotion, it took us a little bit to get going. Once we got into it, Rachel Harris played out of her mind.Alessandra Almendarez was a difference-maker today, she made some crucial saves for us. Without her, it's a different game. Our redefend was great today, we worked on it all week. We wanted to hold them to under 70% effectiveness and we did that. Pretty excited about where we are, with conference play ramping up. Excited for this one and we will celebrate tonight but we'll be ready to get back at it for practice next week."

Quick Facts

  • Alessandra Almendarez notched a new season-high in saves with 15, three shy of her career-best.
  • Rachel Harris led the Firebirds in goals with four along with one assist for five points in the contest. She has now scored four or more goals five times this season.
  • Elizabeth Oda and Maddie Berni each had two goals while Hanna Holloway registered a team-high four assists.
  • With the win, Carthage collects their first win over Wisconsin-River Falls for the first time in program history.
