Firebirds Top Vikings in CCIW Semifinal

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men's volleyball team started the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament with a 3-0 win over North Park on Wednesday at Tarble Arena. 

Both teams came out of the gates swinging as the first was tied at nine. Carthage (19-3), the top seed in the tournament, controlled an 18-15 score off back-to-back attack errors. North Park (14-13), the No. 4 seed, battled back tying it at 21, and took a one-point margin with two straight kills. Though the Vikings got to set point, a kill and two aces from Matt Slivinski gave Carthage the first 26-24. 

The Firebirds held an 8-6 margin early in the second with a Slivinski ace. Though the Vikings went ahead 12-11, Andrew Otto dialed in a kill tying the set. After the visitors took a one-point lead 17-16, Carthage used a quick 5-1 run sparked by kills from Otto and Carter Schmidt. The Firebirds won the second off a service error 25-21. 

David Markes put the home team ahead 12-8 with a kill in the third. Carthage rattled off four-straight points moving the advantage to six at 17-11. Later, three-straight kills from Otto and Markes widened the lead to 23-19. The Firebirds won the game as Markes and Slivinski closed it out with a pair of kills. 

Up next, Carthage stays at home for the CCIW Tournament finals taking on North Central (Ill.) on Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m.

Quick Facts

  • David Markes led the Firebirds in kills with 14 marking the sixth time this season the sophomore has recorded double-digit kills in a match. 
  • Markes was followed closely by Matt Slivinski and Andrew Otto who each tallied 11 kills. 
  • Slivinski had a match and season-best eight aces while Gene McNulty had over 40 assists for the seventh time this season concluding the day with 43.
