Men's Volleyball Crowned 2022 CCIW Tournament Champs

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men's volleyball team defeated North Central (Ill.) 3-1 to win the 2022 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament title Saturday night at Tarble Arena. 

North Central (Ill.) (19-4) came out with an 8-3 lead to start. Carthage (20-3) battle back getting within one off a Cardinals attack error. The Firebirds later tied it at 17 with a kill from Matt Slivinski. After the visitors went up 21-19, Carthage got within one off a Carter Schmidt kill. Though another Slivinski kill got it to one, North Central (Ill.) took the first 25-23. 

In the second, the Cardinals controlled a 6-3 advantage. Carthage responded tying the set at seven off a Schmidt kill and a bad set for North Central (Ill.). The Firebirds held close to the Cardinals not letting the lead grow more than one as a Zach Bulthuis strike flipped the score to 17-16 in favor of Carthage. Back-to-back kills for the visitors and a bad set by the home team changed the score to 19-17. Following the score being tied at 22, Carthage used three Cardinals attack errors to win the set 25-23. 

Two consecutive kills from Daniel Dyner and Schmidt gave Carthage a 12-9 score in the third. After North Central (Ill.) got it to one at 18-17, four straight points for the home team widened the gap to five. A closing kill from Slivinski won it 25-21. 

With momentum on their side, Carthage held a 14-8 score with a kill from Dyner. After a David Markes block put up eight, the Cardinals added two quick points changing the score to 18-12. The Firebirds won with another Slivinski kill 25-17. 

The Firebirds will now see who they will play in the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Tournament which will be announced on Monday, April 11 at 9 a.m.

Quick Facts

  • Two Firebirds finished with double-digit kills: Matt Slivinski (24) and Carter Schmidt (14). 
  • The 24 kills for Slivinski was a season-best and he hit .455 in the contest which was a match-best. 
  • David Markes led the team in blocks with six followed by Zach Bulthuis with five. 
  • Gene McNulty recorded 48 assists and now has 1,453 for his career.
  • It marks the second consecutive CCIW Conference Tournament title for the program and second under head coach JW Kieckhefer.
