Firebirds Conclude Regular Season with 18-12 win over Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The Carthage College women's lacrosse team wrapped up the regular season with an 18-12 win over Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Tucci Stadium.

The Titans (5-12, 3-3 CCIW) went ahead with a goal at the 12:06 mark of the first until Margaux Giacotto scored on a free position shot tying it at one. Maddie Berni gave Carthage (15-2, 5-1 CCIW) their first lead of the game scoring with 2:32 left in the first. Illinois Wesleyan responded tying it at two heading to the second quarter.

Illinois Wesleyan regained the lead at the 12:46 mark of the second however, Rachel Harris tied it 27 seconds later. The home team went up one with 9:58 left in the quarter but another goal from Harris saw the score all squared at four. Three straight goals for the Firebirds gave them a 7-4 advantage heading into the halftime break.

After the Titans put in one, Carthage scored two making it 9-5. Illinois Wesleyan responded shrinking the deficit to three but the Firebirds got the goal back as Harris scored her third of the game. 28 seconds later, Berni tallied another goal for the 11-6 score. Carthage held a 13-8 margin heading to the fourth quarter.

Following a lightning delay, the Titans registered two in the fourth until a free position goal from Harris moved the score to 14-10. Illinois Wesleyan once again got within three with 7:37 left in regulation but a free position goal from Giacotto put them back up four. The Firebirds netted four-straight goals as they went on to win 18-12.

Head Coach John Sung

"I think our team was extremely resilient today. I'm really proud of this group for finishing off the regular season with the best record in Carthage history. I'm excited for this group to be able to host on Wednesday. Rachel Harris was really good tonight, I think it's the best I've seen her play. Every time Illinois Wesleyan scored, she responded with a goal of her own. We shot the ball really well and I'm really happy with how our offensive stepped up today and answered the bell. Defensively, we did some really good things. Excited to be playing another game at Art Keller Field. We taking the right steps and looking forward to Wednesday!"
