Firebirds Fend Off Carroll to Advance to CCIW Finals

KENOSHA, Wis. — In the semifinals of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Women's Lacrosse Tournament, the Carthage College women's lacrosse team defeated Carroll (Wis.) 15-13 Wednesday night at Art Keller Field.

After the Pioneers (9-7) started with a three goal lead, the Firebirds (16-2) responded, scoring seven goals over the first and second quarter. Though Carroll (Wis.) put one in at the 2:50 mark of the second, Hanna Holloway found the back of the net, making it 8-4. Carthage went into the halftime break up 8-5.

Two goals from Elizabeth Oda and Margaux Giacotto extended the margin to five until the Pioneers netted two straight. Four goals for the home team saw the lead grow to 14-7, heading to the final quarter.

Carroll (Wis.) tallied five unanswered goals in the fourth, shrinking the deficit to two, however, Giacotto recorded her 63rd season goal making it 15-12. Although the Pioneers scored with two seconds left, Carthage won 15-13.

Carthage takes on No. 1 UChicago on Saturday, May 7, at 6 p.m.

Head Coach John Sung

"I'm excited to be playing for a conference championship on Saturday. That 7-0 run to get us back in the game really helped us. I'm really happy with the way our offense stepped up in the second and third. I think as we got down the stretch, we just needed to make sure we were doing the basic things. We turned the ball over a little too much; we'll clean that up for this weekend. I'm really excited the opportunity to play UChicago again. That was our only conference loss, but I'm really proud of this team. To get to 16 wins is pretty impressive hopefully, we can go out and get No. 17 on Saturday."
