Last Minute Goal Lifts Firebirds Past Pioneers in Regular-Season Home Finale

KENOSHA, Wis. — In their regular-season home finale, the Carthage College women's lacrosse team defeated Carroll (Wis.) 9-8 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) action on Wednesday.

The Pioneers (8-6, 3-2 CCIW) struck first, scoring at the 9:12 mark, however the Firebirds (14-2, 4-1 CCIW) responded with two unanswered goals from Hanna Holloway and Rachel Harris. With 3:12 left in the first, Carroll (Wis.) tied it at two. A goal from Elizabeth Oda and another from Harris put Carthage back ahead 4-2 until two-straight goals for the visitors saw the score tied heading into halftime.

The Firebirds started the third with a goal from Margaux Giacotto, and two from Oda extended the lead to 7-4. Carroll (Wis.) retaliated with three goals tying it at seven. After another goal from Giactotto gave the advantage back to Carthage, the visitors scored with 2:04 left in the fourth. A game-winning goal from Giacotto sealed the victory for the Firebirds 9-8.

Carthage wraps up the regular season playing Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, April 30, starting at 4 p.m.

Head Coach John Sung

"I thought our defense played really well today. I really liked the communication we had, and we executed our game plan really well on the defensive end. Offensively, it took us a little bit to get going, but once we started to be patient and take some better quality shots we saw some success. I thought Elizabeth Oda had a good game. She had a big time assist to Margaux Giacotto there at the end. I thought we were really getting close to into it. We had a two goal swing with the man-up and man-down goal that got Carroll (Wis.) back into the game. I'm excited to see them again. I'm excited to get to Illinois Wesleyan and finish the season out hopefully as the two seed going into the tournament."
