Men’s Volleyball Wins Seventh CCIW Contest at Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa. — The No. 3 Carthage College men's volleyball team took down Loras 3-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action on Wednesday.

The score was locked at nine in the first until Loras (15-3, 4-2 CCIW) went up by two off an ace and service error 11-9. A David Markes block tied it at 13 then a Matt Slivinski ace gave Carthage (11-3, 7-0 CCIW) a one-point lead 14-13. With the score even at 19, the Duhawks took control with a two-point lead off kill and a visitors attack error. Though a Loras service error made it 23-21, the Duhawks held on to win the first 25-22.

In the second, Carthage turned the tables going up 7-3 highlighted by back-to-back kills from Markes and Carter Schmidt. Kills from Slivinski and Schmidt added to the Firebirds lead 15-11. Later, a Loras attack error extended the visitor's advantage to 21-13. Although Loras made a late push, another attack error for the home team gave Carthage the second 25-20.

The Firebirds held a 6-2 margin to start sparked by a Slivinski kill and a Duhawks error. A 7-3 run for Carthage moved the score to 13-5. Zach Bulthuis hit a strike making it 16-8 as Carthage won it 25-14.

With momentum on their side, Carthage controlled a 10-4 score in the fourth. Loras battled to a four-point margin but a block from Gene McNulty and Bulthuis made it 15-10. The home team got as close as five until two Slivinski kills made it a seven-point margin as the visitors won 25-17.

Carthage returns home facing Fontbonne on Friday, March 11 starting at 7 p.m.

Head Coach JW Kieckhefer

"What a great road win for our team tonight! I was so proud of our group for battling to respond after a slow start in set one. Our energy and play continued to get better throughout the night. Great teams battle and believe in each other. They work to turn momentum. Our battle on the defensive end, and our consistency from the service line in set two, really turned the momentum of the match. We never looked back.

Our middles were absolutely incredible today. Both David Markes and Zach Bulthuis controlled the net with their blocking moves and hit above .500. When you can bring that kind of pressure from the center of the floor, good things happen. Kyle Cohan was an absolute all-star in the backcourt for us digging everything. Finally, I could not be more impressed with Carter Schmidt's complete game at the Outside Hitter position. He did everything for us today: blocked, scored with his serve, passed well when called upon, and was unstoppable offensively.

This was a great TEAM win again. Every single guy on this roster is making a massive impact on this run. I am so happy with the improvement we have shown this season. The fun thing is that there is still a better Carthage to find. There is still a lot of growth out there. I'm excited to continue to work towards that with these guys."
