Game Recap: #6 Men's Volleyball |

Phenomenal Offense Leads No. 3 Firebirds Over Fontbonne

KENOSHA, Wis. — The No. 3 Carthage College men's volleyball team picked up another victory defeating Fontbonne in straight sets in non-conference action on Friday night. 

Carthage (12-3) began with an 11-4 start highlighted with a kill from Carter Schmidt. Later, David Markes added kill giving the Firebirds an eight-point lead. A Fontbonne (12-5) attack error gave the home team the set 25-16. 

The Firebirds continued the momentum in the second going up 12-6 with back-to-back kills from Zach Bulthuis. Later, Schmidt put away a kill moving the Carthage advantage to seven as the Firebirds a closing kill from Markes won it 25-17. 

In the third, three straight kills from Schmidt and Matt Slivinski gave Carthage a 15-6 margin. Bulthuis put in another kill extending the score to 22-12 as a Griffins service error sealed the victory for Carthage 25-17. 

Up next, the Firebirds return to conference play facing Augustana (Ill.) at home on Wednesday, March 16 at 7 p.m.

Quick Facts

  • Zach Bulthuis led the Firebirds in kills with 13 while Carter Schmidt added 12 kills. Bulthuis hit .750 in the match while Schmidt hit a team-high .923.
  • Overall, the Firebird offense hit a season-best .613 with 43 kills, five errors off 62 total attacks. 
  • Peyton Wieter and David Markes each had three blocks while Matt Slivinski had two and four aces. 
  • Gene McNulty recorded 39 assists in the match moving his career total to 1,222.
