Men's Volleyball Sweeps Millikin in CCIW Contest

DECATUR, Ill. — The No. 6 Carthage College men's volleyball team racked up another conference victory beating Millikin in straight sets on Saturday.

The Firebirds (10-3, 6-0 CCIW) began the match with a quick 10-4 margin with a kill from Drew Jansen and a home team attack error. After Millikin (0-14, 0-5 CCIW) got it to five, back-to-back kills from Zach Bulthuis made it 14-5. A kill from Easton Gavin made it 20-9 as Carthage won the set 25-14 off a Justin Girodat kill.

In the second, a kill from Keegan Brumitt put the visitors ahead 5-3 early. Though Millikin got within two, a Big Blue attack error and a kill from Andrew Otto flipped the score to 18-12. The home team got it to seven before another Jansen kill won it 25-17.

Carthage held an 8-4 score in the third with an ace from Jansen. Millikin shrunk the deficit to one before an 8-2 run for the Firebirds opened it to 17-10. Later, three unanswered points including a kill from Kyle Radecki and a block from Otto gave Carthage a six-point advantage as Carthage won 25-20.

Next up, Carthage stays on the road facing No. 15 Loras on Wednesday, March 9 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach JW Kieckhefer

"I am really proud of the way we played today after a long bus ride. We have been working a lot on playing clean and efficient volleyball and I thought we accomplished that for most of the day.

I thought Justin Girodat did a great job running the offense today. He was able to diversify the offense and keep the Millikin defense guessing. Keegan Brumitt was really efficient and smart with his attacking today. Easton Gavin was steady in serve receive and made some really intelligent defensive reads as the match went on.

We had some amazing hustle plays and rallies as a unit today. We refused to let the ball land and made life tough to score for our opponent. That is the level of effort and attitude we need to continue to play with if we want to accomplish our goals this season."
