Firebirds Ignite in Second Half to Defeat Lake Forest 17-6

KENOSHA, Wis. — After entering the halftime break even with Lake Forest College, the Carthage men's lacrosse team opened it up in the second half to win 17-6 on Saturday at Art Keller Field.

The visitors were first on the board, as they scored a pair of quick goals minutes into the first quarter to lead the Firebirds (3-0) 2-0. William Clemens would respond with a pair of goals to tie it at two, before the Foresters (1-2) scored with seconds left to own a 3-2 lead by the end of the period. Moments into the second quarter, Lake Forest took a 4-2 lead, but Ben Krok and Clemens would once again respond for Carthage to make it four-all. Goals with just over five and three minutes left in the half gave the visitors a two-goal lead, but the Firebirds responded yet again, as George Burchfield scored with 1:28 left and Andrew Frey with just eight seconds remaining to send the teams to the locker rooms for halftime tied at six.

Second-half adjustments by head coach David Neff and the Firebirds put them in the driver seat for the rest of the contest, as they would shutout the Foresters in the entire second half, while scoring 11 unanswered. Clemens added his third goal of the day less than a minute into the third period, before Alec Gern scored a man-up goal to make it 8-6. After Andrew Johnson assisted a goal by Johnny Lane, the sophomore would find the back of the net himself, with goals by Krueger, Johnson, Clemens, Gern, and Peter Vodovnik leading Carthage to the 11-point win.

The Firebirds will remain at home next, hosting the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Wednesday, March 9 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach David Neff

"Lake Forest is a pretty solid team offensively, and they gave us trouble early on. A couple of guys were playing for the first time this year that weren't quite ready for today. As far as what we weren't able to accomplish in the first half, we didn't stay within our gameplan on clearing, and they were able to keep the ball in their offensive zone, which set the tempo for the first half."

"In the second half, the reason it was different is we were able to break it up, got back to winning faceoffs, and offensively guys shard the ball. Once we started moving it and getting it out of our sticks, it opened everything up. Alec Gern and Will Clemens played great today, I thought they carried us and Gern kind of took over the game at the end."
