No. 6 Firebirds Hand No. 4 Cardinals First Loss of the Season

KENOSHA, Wis. — The No. 6 Carthage College men's volleyball team stayed perfect in conference play winning over No. 4 North Central (Ill.) 3-1 on Wednesday night at Tarble Arena.

The Firebirds (9-3, 5-0 CCIW) started with a quick 7-4 margin with a block from Zach Bulthuis and Carter Schmidt. North Central (Ill.) (10-1, 3-1 CCIW) got within one before a kill from Matt Slivinski made it 9-7. After the Cardinals tied it at 10, a Slivinski kill and ace put the home team back in front 15-11. Later, a kill from Bulthuis extended the Carthage advantage to four. A Firebirds block put the home team up seven as Carthage won the set 25-17.

Each team traded point-for-point to start the second until a Peyton Wieter and Bulthuis block gave the Firebirds an 8-6 lead. David Markes added a kill extending the Firebird margin to 15-10 forcing Cardinals timeout. A Slivinski kill widened the gap to seven, however, the Cardinals battled back shrinking the deficit to 23-22. Another kill from Slivinski won the second 25-23.

In the third, the score was locked at 11 with a visitors service error. Wieter later tied it at 14 with a kill. North Central (Ill.) took control of the set 20-16 off a Firebirds attack error. Carthage battled back tying it at 25, but the visitors collected the final two points to force a fourth 27-25.

The Cardinals controlled a 6-2 score early in the fourth off a kill and ace. Three straight points for Carthage tied it at 16. Bulthuis put Carthage out in front 19-17, however, the visitors responded making it a three-point game with a kill. Though North Central (Ill.) got it to two, Carthage won the match with a closing kill from Slivinski.
