Firebirds Drop Road Contest at Birmingham-Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Carthage men's lacrosse team wrapped up their spring break road trip on Friday, falling to Birmingham-Southern College 22-9 at General Krulak Stadium.

The home team took an early 3-0 lead on the Firebirds (5-2), before Ben Krok scored to cut the deficit to two early in the second quarter. However, four unanswered goals from Birmingham-Southern (7-2) made it a 7-1 match, before Krok added two more goals. Scoring once more before the end of the half, the home team would lead by five at the midway break.

Goals by Andrew Frey and Alec Gern were met with eight from Birmingham-Southern in the third period, before falling in the fourth quarter 6-4 to set the final tally at 22-9.

The Firebirds will return home next Wednesday when they host Concordia University Wisconsin on March 23 at 7 p.m. at Art Keller Field.

Head Coach David Neff

"It was a frustrating day and a disappointing one. I really thought we were ready to bounce back from a tough loss, but I don't think I challenged the team in the right way. We needed to get back to work, we can't afford to not work hard every day even when we have quick turnarounds, and I should have pushed the guys harder the two off days."

"I think that may be the most goals we have ever given up outside the CCIW. We came out flat, and never righted the ship. Even after a tough start, I 100% believed we would come out of the half and put in a couple goals and be right back in the game. I really did. Penalties are killing us and after being great in man-down defense all year, today we didn't have a single stop."

"Right now we aren't learning from our mistakes and aren't sticking together in tough emotional points. If we can figure that out I think we can still have a surprise season, but everyone needs to start being accountable. We just need to be better at supporting one another. We have a run of five home games here and have a choice how we want to respond from this tough week of games."
