KENOSHA, Wis. — With a five-point win at Art Keller Field, the Carthage men's lacrosse team took down Concordia University Wisconsin on Wednesday night 15-10 to remain undefeated at home.
The Firebirds (6-2) took a quick lead 1-0 just minutes into the match, as Andrew Frey found the back of the net. While the Falcons (3-4) evened it moments later, the home team quickly responded to make it 2-1 thanks to a score from Andrew Johnson. One more tie at two points apiece was quickly broken by four unanswered goals to end the first quarter, as Ben Krok, Frey, and Johnson helped make it 6-2 at the start of the second quarter.
Midway through the second period, the Firebirds rattled off three goals to take a seven-goal lead, before Concordia Wisconsin scored with a minute left in the half. A last-second goal by Johnson from Frey set the board at 10-3 at halftime.
The visitors quickly scored seconds into the last half, but the Firebirds would respond in the third period with a string of four goals to extend their lead to 10. A goal from the Falcons set the score at 14-5 headed to the fourth quarter. While the visitors would score five goals in the final 15 minute of play, Carthage remained in front to win by five.
The Firebirds remain at home next, as they host Hope College on Saturday, March 26 for a match at noon.
"The guys came out really great today and I am really proud of them. It's nice to bounce back after a tough week. The offense looked great and the defense was focused on holding them to five through 45. The end got a bit too messy as we tried to close out, but it was important to me to try and get some kids in with a nine goal lead. We have a big one against Hope this weekend and it will give us a good idea if we can play with the top teams in the Midwest Region."
