Game Recap: #6 Men's Volleyball |

Firebirds Collect Regular Season Sweep of Augustana

KENOSHA, Wis. — The No. 3 Carthage College men's volleyball team picked up their eighth conference win over Augustana (Ill.) on Wednesday at Tarble Arena. 

Carthage (13-3, 8-0 CCIW) began the match with a 10-4 capped off with an ace David Markes. Later, back-to-back kills from Zach Bulthuis and Peyton Wieter made it 14-8. A kill from Gene McNulty and two aces from Matt Slivinski put the Firebirds up eight as a final kill from Drew Jansen gave Carthage the first set 25-13. 

The home team continued the momentum in the second with a 10-4 score. After Augustana (Ill.) (6-12, 2-5 CCIW) made it a five-point margin, six unanswered points changed it to 21-10 with an ace from Daniel Dyner. Another kill from Jansen sealed the second 25-15. 

In the third, Andrew Otto nailed a kill putting the Firebirds up 12-5. Later, Keegan Brumitt added a kill giving Carthage a seven-point lead. Though the Vikings kept it at a seven-point score, Dyner closed it out with a kill 25-17. 

The Firebirds stay at home facing Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday, 23 at 7 p.m.

Quick Facts

  • Drew Jansen led the Firebirds with seven kills followed closely by Andrew Otto who had six. 
  • Otto also had four blocks in the match while Jansen had six digs. 
  • Nick Cookingham and Gene McNulty each had 13 assists in the game. 
  • With 18 team aces in the match, the Firebirds recorded a new season-best.
