Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Carthage Drops Nail-Biter with Eleventh-Ranked Wisconsin Lutheran

KENOSHA, Wis. — In a close game in which the Firebirds held a lead through the first three quarters, the Carthage women's basketball team fell 53-47 to No. 11 Wisconsin Lutheran on Wednesday evening in Tarble Arena.

The home team struck first, as Lauren Knight connected from three to give the Firebirds (10-12) the lead. Another make from beyond the arc moments later, this time by Ayanna Ester, made it 6-2, before Carthage finished the first 10 minutes of play with an 11-7 advantage. A jumper by Emma thistle kept things rolling for the Firebirds to begin the second quarter, before a layup from Margueret Spear put them up by eight, 15-7. Carthage would hold that eight-point lead by halftime, as a pair of free throws from Marianna Morrissey made it a 21-13 score at the halftime break.

After the Firebirds pushed their lead to 10 just minutes into the third period, the Warriors (19-0) would quickly cut their deficit to two. The home team held on to their lead throughout the third quarter, and entered the final period up 35-31. Following a pair of free throws from Knight, Wisconsin Lutheran scored six quick points to tie the game at 37. Midway through the final quarter, the visitors would step out in front 41-39 on a layup, holding that lead through the final buzzer.

Carthage returns to conference action next, as they host Augustana on Saturday, February 12 at 2 p.m.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"They drove the ball and attacked us well. We got up 10 points in the third quarter, and then it turned; they drove it on us, got to the free throw line, and were coming at us and we didn't respond well. We prepared for the dribble-drive from them, and handled it decently in the first half, but they started attacking and our support wasn't enough. It would have been nice to hand them their first loss of the season here. Our offense in the second half just didn't accept the physicality."

  • Bridgett Barrett led the team tonight with eight rebounds, and averages a team-best 5.8 per contest this season.
