Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Firebirds Come Up Short Against Vikings

KENOSHA, Wis. — The game saw 11 lead changes and eight ties, but the Carthage women's basketball team dropped a tight contest with Augustana on Saturday 62-58 in Tarble Arena.

The team's leading three-point shooter, Ayanna Ester put the Firebirds (10-13, 5-9 CCIW) on the board with a make from beyond the arc. A handful of ties and lead changes in the first quarter came to an 11-all game with just over a minute remaining, before the Vikings (12-12, 6-9 CCIW) stepped out in front 14-13 by the buzzer. Yet another competitive quarter led to Carthage securing a four-point lead off a layup by Bridget Barrett, eventually taking a one-point lead into the halftime break as the home team was up 26-25.

While the Firebirds held a lead through a majority of the third period, Augustana would go out in front with 4:22 left in the third period on a three, 35-34. However, a layup from Marianna Morrissey before the end of the quarter gave Carthage a 42-39 advantage heading into the final quarter. A three from the visitors to begin the final 10 minutes of play tied the game, with Lauren Herrmann evening the score at 50 moments later on a three of her own. A 55-55 draw would be the final tie of the game however, as the Vikings would go on to win by four.

Carthage plays their final weekday game of the regular season next, as they travel to Waukesha, Wis. to take on Carroll on Wednesday, February 16 for a 7 p.m. game.
