No. 13 Wheaton Bests Carthage in CCIW Matchup

WHEATON, Ill. — The Carthage College men's basketball team lost to No. 13 Wheaton (Ill.) 87-71 on the road in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) matchup Wednesday night at King Arena.

Carthage (9-13, 2-11 CCIW) started with a 9-5 lead over Wheaton (Ill.) (18-4, 10-3 CCIW) early with a three-pointer from AJ Johnson. A 14-6 run for the Thunder flipped the score to 19-15 with 10:46 left in the half. Later, Antuan Nesbitt made a layup shrinking the deficit to 26-20. The Firebirds continued to chip away at the lead as a Nemi Ostojic layup made it 31-26, but the home team closed out the half with a small 7-2 run. 

The Thunder moved the margin to 15 in the second half with a fast break jumper. A jumper at the 8:34 mark from Johnson cut it to 14, but another 12-4 run for the home team moved it to 77-55. Though Carthage made it a 14-point game twice with a three-pointer from Crishawn Cook and a layup from Fillip Bulatovic, Wheaton (Ill.) took the victory 87-71. 

The Firebirds return home to face Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday, February 12 at 4 p.m.
