Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Comeback Attempt Falls Short at Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Outscoring their opponents by 10 in the second half wasn't enough as the Carthage women's basketball team fell to Illinois Wesleyan 58-52 on Saturday at the Shirk Center.

The home team took an early lead before the Firebirds (10-11, 5-8 CCIW) were able to jump on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter with a layup from Margueret Spear. The Titans (13-7, 10-1 CCIW) took a 14-7 advantage into the second period, and would continue to grow their lead through the remainder of the first half. Despite scoring 14 in the quarter, the Firebirds would trail Illinois Wesleyan 37-21 at halftime.

Layups from Addison Ebeling and Bridget Barrett helped cut into the deficit, with a three by Ebeling lowering it to single digits. A three by Ester would make it a 44-33 game heading into the final quarter.

A layup and free throws by Lauren Knight set the score at 44-37 minutes into the fourth frame. Capping off an 11-0 run to open the quarter, Ebeling found Kelsey Coshun down low to tie the game at 44 with just over five minutes remaining. After two scores from the Titans, another make from beyond the arc by Ebeling made it a one-point game. However, the comeback effort would fall short as the home team would go on to win by six.

The Firebirds return home next to take on Wisconsin Lutheran on Wednesday, February 9 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"We have got to quit putting ourselves in bad positions, which we did to start, and we gave them an advantage to where we end up chasing them the whole game. We tried to adjust in the second half, but made a couple of mistakes at the wrong time. When the games are that close, it's the little details that separate it. While we got to a point with two to three minutes left where the game was close, we had to match they're activity and we didn't do that. If you meet them head on, you see what can happen in the third and fourth quarter. When we did the right stuff, we made it hard for them. The ability to be in the right spot each time is a next step to winning for us."
