Game Recap: #22 Men's Basketball |

Firebirds Fall to No. 10 Illinois Wesleyan in CCIW Action

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The Carthage College men's basketball team fell to No. 10 Illinois Wesleyan 66-57 on the road in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action Saturday night at Shirk Center.

Carthage (9-12, 2-10 CCIW) began the game with a 7-4 lead with a layup from Fillip Bulatovic. Illinois Wesleyan (16-4, 9-2 CCIW) bounced back taking control of the game at 21-14 with a layup at the 7:35 mark however, Crishawn Cook hit a fast break jumper and free throw shrinking the deficit to 23-20. The Titans controlled a slim 28-20 margin heading to halftime.

The home team went up by 14 in the second before Carthage made it a five-point game with a jumper from AJ Johnson then two free throws from Nemi Ostojic cut it to 38-33 with 12:54 remaining. The Titans responded using a 12-4 run to go up 50-37. After the home team made it an 18-point game, Carthage cut the advantage to eight with a jumper and free throw from Kyle Kostes 64-56, but Illinois Wesleyan won by a final score of 66-57.

Up next, the Firebirds face No. 15 Wheaton (Ill.) on Wednesday, February 9 at 7 p.m. on the road.

Head Coach Steve Djurickovic

"I thought we did a really nice job on the defensive end tonight. Holding a team like Illinois Wesleyan to 38% from the floor and 24% from three is a credit to our guys. We battled and competed for 40 minutes! Unfortunately, we had too many stretches on offense where we didn't get into our sets. The second half was much better when we were able to attack them downhill to the rim and get to the free-throw line."
