No. 7 Men’s Volleyball Tops Illinois Wesleyan in CCIW Action

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The No. 7 Carthage College added another the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) road win beating Illinois Wesleyan 3-1 on Saturday.

The Firebirds (8-3, 4-0 CCIW) held a fast 6-2 margin in the first with an ace from Matt Slivinski. After a Titans (6-8, 1-3 CCIW) attack error put the visitors up 8-3, Illinois Wesleyan outscored Carthage 10-3 flipping the score to 13-11. Following the Firebirds regaining the lead with three straight points, the Titans tied it at 19 with an ace. Back-to-back kills from Slivinski and Andrew Otto gave Carthage set-point but three unanswered points for the home team gave them the set win 26-24.

With the score locked at seven early in the second, four straight points for Carthage including kills from Slivinski and Zach Bulthuis put the Firebirds ahead 11-7. After Illinois Wesleyan got within one with a kill of their own, three kills from David Markes extended the lead to four. The Firebirds went on to win the set off back-to-back attack errors 25-17.

In the third, Carthage held an 11-6 margin with a kill from Slivinski. Slivinski later added a solo block which made it 16-8. Drew Jansen hit a strike at 18-11 as a closing kill from Markes gave Carthage the set 25-16.

With momentum on their side, the Firebirds opened the fourth with six unanswered points. Though the Titans made it a four-point deficit, Carthage responded with five-straight points capped off with kills from Otto and Jansen. Nick Cookingham put Carthage up 11 with a kill as the Firebirds won 25-11.

The Firebirds return home facing No. 4 North Central (Ill.) at home on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach JW Kieckhefer

"Tough start for us today and it was really difficult for us to find our rhythm. We made some bad decisions with the ball and it led to a lot of errors. Credit to Illinois Wesleyan. They came out to play and put some pressure on us all match.

I was proud of the response from our group in sets two through four. We got back to playing Carthage volleyball and we're confident about our play.

I thought Andrew Otto did an incredible job at the net for us when he was given his opportunities. He was really efficient offensively and blocked the ball well. Daniel Dyner's all-around play was impressive today. He was able to take advantage of some one-on-one looks and block some balls in big moments. David Markes, Gene McNulty, and Jack McDonald provided a great spark for us today off the bench."
