Carroll Bests Carthage in Final Road Game for the Firebirds

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Carthage women's basketball team dropped a 58-44 contest against Carroll on Wednesday night in the Van Male Fieldhouse.

The home team was first on the board, converting a pair of free throws, before Kelsey Coshun got the Firebirds (10-14, 5-10 CCIW) in the scoring column with two from the charity stripe herself to make it 4-2. However, the Pioneers (17-6, 9-6 CCIW) pushed their lead to seven, and eventually went on a run to set the scoreboard at 23-9 in favor of Carroll by the end of the first quarter. A pair of quick scores early in the second period gave the Pioneers an 18-point lead, before a three-point play from Lauren Knight and layup by Coshun made it 29-16 with just over five minutes left before halftime. The Carthage defense would hold their opponent to free throws for the remainder of the first half, as a three from Knight would settle the score at 32-19 at the midway break.

Two free throws from Destiny Antoine and a layup from Knight helped cut into the deficit, but the home team steadily increased their lead. A pair of late scores to close out the third quarter gave the home team a lead by 21, up 53-32. The Pioneers would hold their lead and go on to win by 14.

The Firebirds will play in their final game of the 2021-22 season on Saturday, February 19 at 2 p.m., when they host Elmhurst for senior day.
