Firebirds Close Out 2021-22 Season with Victory on Senior Day

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage women's basketball team ended their season on a high note on Saturday, picking up a 56-37 win over Elmhurst on senior day in Tarble Arena.

While the visitors were first to strike with a three pointer, Lauren Knight responded for the Firebirds (11-14, 6-10 CCIW) with a three of her own to tie it up moments later. The two teams would sit in a tie once more at five each, before two free throws from Knight gave Carthage a lead they would hold for the remainder of the contest. A layup from Marianna Morrissey in the closing seconds gave the home team a 13-7 lead on the Bluejays (3-22, 1-15 CCIW) at the end of the first quarter.

A three from Addison Ebeling and free throw by Lauren Herrmann pushed the Carthage lead to double-digits, 17-7. It was all Firebirds through the final minutes of the first half, as the home team went to the locker room up 31-20. Carthage extended their lead in the third quarter, as Kelsey Coshun hit a layup down low and jumper to make it 35-23 midway through the period. A layup through a foul and free throw from Herrmann put the Firebirds up 44-28 heading into the final 10 minutes of play. Carthage would go on to pick up the win on senior day behind a 12-9 fourth quarter.
