Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UChicago Pulls Past Carthage in Illinois

CHICAGO, Ill. - Looking for its third win in a row, the Carthage women's basketball team battled UChicago until the very end before falling to the Maroons in Chicago. Carthage trailed by two going into the half and led after three quarters, but a strong offensive showing from the home team in the fourth proved too much for the Firebirds to overcome.

The Basics

  • Final score: UChicago 80, Carthage 72.
  • Location: Ratner Athletics Center - Chicago, Ill.
  • Records: Carthage 2-4, UChicago 6-0.

How it Happened

  • The two teams were knotted at nine-apiece after five minutes of play, as Bridget Barrett led all scorers with six points.
  • Carthage went on a run offensively towards the end of the first quarter to give itself a three-point lead going into quarter two. The Firebirds scored on four possessions in a row, including two threes from Ayanna Ester and a three from Lauren Knight
  • UChicago converted at the free throw line and Grace Hynes caught fire to give the Maroons a five-point lead late into the second quarter. The Maroons led by as many as nine before Ebeling, Ester, and Knight each scored to shrink the deficit to two heading into the locker room.
  • The third quarter was evenly matched as the two teams traded baskets. Carthage led 52-50 going into the last ten minutes of play.
  • The Firebirds led by six early on in the fourth before UChicago went on a run of its own to take the lead. Hynes and Marissa Powe were able to find gaps in Carthage's defense to gain control of the game and steal the win away. Hynes led all scorers with 33 points.
  • Carthage shot well as a team today, converting at a 46.9/45/73.9 clip, but UChicago's offense proved to be too much to handle in the defeat.

High Flyers

  • Senior guard Ayanna Ester put together yet another impressive showing offensively, scoring an uber-efficient 16 points on nine shots. Ester hit four of seven three-point attempts. After scoring ten points in her first three games combined, Ester has scored 15, 18, and 16 points in her last three games, respectively.
  • Junior guard Lauren Knight shot 5-11 from the field in her 18-point performance today while also grabbing four rebounds and dishing out four assists.
  • Bridget Barrett hauled in six rebounds in 21 minutes of action.

Up Next

  • A trip to Elmhurst, Illinois is next on the docket for Carthage, as the Bluejays and Firebirds will battle on Saturday, December 3 beginning at 2 p.m.
