Women's Basketball Picks Up Key Road Win at Elmhurst in Conference Opener

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Carthage women's basketball team won its third game in its last four tries, picking up a key road, conference win over Elmhurst. The win moves Carthage to 3-4 and 1-0 in conference. 


The Basics
 
  • Final score: Carthage 64, Elmhurst 55. 
  • Location: R.A. Faganel Hall - Elmhurst, Ill. 
  • Records: Carthage 3-4 (1-0 CCIW), Elmhurst 1-6, (0-1 CCIW)

How it Happened 
 
  • The two squads played an evenly-matched first quarter, with Carthage holding a three-point lead at its conclusion. Seven different Firebirds scored in the first quarter of play. 
  • Carthage hit a pair of threes to go ahead by ten points early in the second quarter before the Bluejays responded with a 12-0 run to take a two-point lead. Back-to-back buckets by Marianna Morrissey and a three-pointer by Ayanna Ester gave Carthage a three-point advantage heading into the locker room. 
  • The Firebirds opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run to pull ahead by nine before the home team rattled off five straight. Morrissey hit another jumper to give her team a solid six-point margin going into the final quarter. 
  • Elmhurst's Taylor Harazin went on a personal 6-0 run to begin the fourth quarter but Carthage hit threes and knocked down key free throws to take the win. 
  • Carthage didn't shoot the ball particularly well in the win, but its defense stifled the Bluejays. Elmhurst turned the ball over 18 times and shot 35.8/31.8/62.5 during the game

High Flyers
 
  • Junior forward Bridget Barrett put on yet another defensive masterclass. wreaking havoc in the passing lanes and on the glass. Barrett collected a career-high 16 rebounds and stole five passes, which was also a career-high. 
  • Sophomore forward Marianna Morrissey hit some timely shots in her ten point, seven rebound performance. Morrissey also stole two passes. 
  • Sophomore forward Elena Knebel tied a career-high with two blocks.

  • Carthage continues its trek through the state of Illinois a week from today as they take on Millikin University in Decatur on Saturday, December 10.
