Women's Bowling Concludes Play at SFA Ladyjack Classic, Powers Records Another Top-Ten Finish

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage College Firebirds women's bowling team competed at the Stephen F. Austin University Ladyjack Classic at Sheridan Lanes over the weekend. The field was full of talented bowlers from across the country, as nine of the competing teams were ranked in the top 25 by the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA). Carthage took 12th at the event, while Sophomore Caitlin Powers netted yet another top-ten performance. 


The Basics
 
  • Result: 12th place out of 14 teams. 
  • Location: Sheridan Lanes - Kenosha, Wisconsin. 

How it Happened
 
  • Three of the Firebirds' five opponents on day one were ranked in the top 25 nationally by the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA). Carthage also faced off with UW-Whitewater and Valparaiso. Day one consisted of five sets of five-game Baker matches. 
  • The Firebirds first opponent was against the host team, No. 4 Stephen F. Austin University. The Ladyjacks got the best of Carthage, winning 1,070-818. 
  • Carthage faced off with another ranked opponent in its next match, taking on No. 3 University of Nebraska. The Cornhuskers won 1,157-879. 
  • UW-Whitewater got the best of Carthage in the next match, winning by a score of 1,003-779. 
  • Valparaiso was next on the docket for Carthage in match number four of the day, and the Beacons won by a narrow 928-887 score. 
  • No. 20 Lewis University took the fifth and final matchup of the day over the Firebirds, winning 945-896. 
 
  • Day two consisted of five traditional matches, with four being against ranked opponents. 
  • Marian defeated Carthage in the first match of the day by a score of 969-882. 
  • Carthage was defeated in a close contest with No. 25 Newman University in the second match. 
  • No. 6 Arkansas State University knocked down 1,105 pins en route to a victory in the third match of the day. Carthage bowled a then-tournament high of 956 against the Red Wolves. 
  • The Firebirds fell to No. 15 Maryville University 988-904 before dropping their final matchup of the day to No. 1 McKendree University. McKendree defeated Carthage 1,160-933. 
 
  • Carthage began day three by taking on No. 9 Youngstown State University, which  took the victory by a score of 1,009-895. 
  • No. 2 Vanderbilt defeated the Firebirds 1,056-925 in the second match of the day for Carthage. 
  • Carthage's final matchup of the tournament, prior to competing in the championship bracket, was with CCIW rival North Central. The Firebirds seized their first win of the Ladyjack Classic in a nail biting three-point win. The final score was 891-888. 
  • The final matchup of the day for all teams was a best-of-seven baker match to determine final standings for the tournament. Valparaiso and Carthage were pitted against one another as the 11th and 12th seeds, respectively. The Beacons won the match 1,165-1,095 to take 11th at the tournament, while the Firebirds took 12th.

High Flyers
 
  • Sophomore bowler Caitlin Powers recorded yet another top-ten finish, knocking down 1,088 pins en route to a 217.6 average pinfall during the individual portion of the classic. Powers has now finished in the top ten of all three events on Carthage's calendar thus far. 
  • Jessica Rosa and Ashley Turner finished 44th and 45th after knocking down 897 and 889 pins, respectively. 

Up Next
 
  • The Firebirds will compete this upcoming weekend from Saturday, November 19 through Sunday, November 20 at the first CCIW regular season event of the year. The event will be comprised of a series of conference matches, and will take place in Rock Island, Illinois.
