Offense Struggles in Season-Opening Loss For Women's Basketball

DE PERE, Wis. - The Carthage College women's basketball team fell 53-36 to the UW-La Crosse Eagles at the Nicolet National Bank Tip-Off Tournament in De Pere, Wisconsin. Carthage was the road team in the neutral-site matchup tonight and will hit the hardwood in De Pere once again tomorrow - this time against the St. Norbert Green Knights.

  • Final score: UW-La Crosse 53, Carthage 36. 
  • Location: Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center - De Pere, Wisconsin.
  • Records: Carthage 0-1, UW-La Crosse 2-0. 
 
How it Happened 
 
  • Carthage's offense sputtered in the first quarter of play, as the team only scored eight points. The Firebirds committed five turnovers in the first ten minutes of game action. UW-La Crosse led for the entirety of the quarter, leading 17-8 at the end of the period. 
  • Lauren Knight had a strong showing in the opening quarter, putting up five points, three rebounds, and an assist. 
  • The Eagles took a 25-12 lead into halftime as Carthage's offense continued to struggle to get into a rhythm. The Firebirds shot 17.2% in the first 20 minutes, including 10% from three (1-10). Only three Firebirds - Lauren Knight (5), Marianna Morrissey (4), and Ayanna Ester (3) scored in the first half. 
  • Carthage played better in the third period, scoring 11 points, but UW-La Crosse expanded its' lead by five. 
  • The Firebirds won the final quarter 13-12 but failed to threaten the Eagles' lead. UW-La Crosse came away with a 17-point victory in a game it led for all 40 minutes. Carthage shot 10-50 from the field, including 3-20 from three, while committing 16 turnovers against a tenacious UW-La Crosse defense. 
  • After taking only a single free throw in the first half, Carthage got to the line with more frequency in the latter half; the Firebirds attempted 15 freebies, making 12 of them in the final 20 minutes of game time. Carthage also outscored the Eagles 14-10 in the paint tonight. 

High Flyers
 
  • Junior guard Lauren Knight paced the Firebirds in tonight's contest, scoring 15 points and hauling in seven rebounds. 
  • Junior forward Bridget Barrett tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven. 
  • Marianna Morrissey, a sophomore forward from Libertyville, Illinois, turned in a nine-point, four-rebound effort. 
  • First-year guard Alyssa Orozco played her first minutes in a Firebird uniform. 

Up Next 
 
  • The Firebirds hit the hardwood again tomorrow in their final matchup of the Nicolet National Bank Tip-Off Tournament hosted by St. Norbert College. Carthage will battle the host team, St. Norbert, on Saturday, November 12 beginning at 7 p.m.
