Firebirds Clinch Spot in CCIW Tournament, Blank Bluejays in Third Consecutive Shutout Win

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Carthage College women's soccer team, after a 0-7-5 start to the season, has rattled off three consecutive wins over conference competition to secure a berth in the 2022 CCIW Women's Soccer Tournament. First-year goalkeeper Ainsley Stallworth, fresh off of a CCIW Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honor, recorded her third-straight shutout. 

The team will now regroup ahead of its first-round matchup in the CCIW Tournament, which will take place on Saturday, October 29 against the third-seeded Wheaton College Thunder in Wheaton, Illinois. Carthage earned the sixth seed with the 1-0 victory over Elmhurst, and will make its first appearance in the conference tournament since 2015.

How it Happened
 
  • The two teams played to a 0-0 score at the half, though Carthage outshot Elmhurst 8-0. 
  • Carthage broke the stalemate in the 50th minute, as senior Jenny Garcia scored off of a Zaira Solis assist. 
  • Carthage's defense held Elmhurst without a shot for the duration of the game, and the Firebirds failed to convert on 12 shots in the half, leading to the 1-0 victory. 

High Flyers
 
  • Carthage's defense performed admirably, holding the Bluejays without a shot. 
  • Senior midfielder Jenny Garcia scored her second career goal- her first of the season- in the contest. Garcia also took three shots (two on goal) in the game. 
  • Senior defender Zaira Solis notched an assist against Elmhurst - the first of her accomplished career. 
  • Sophomore defender Maggie Thom and junior defender Veronica Walker each took four shots (three on goal) tonight. Sophomore defender Leah Martin (two), junior midfielder Katie Talens (three), and first-year forward Jess Beymer (two) each took multiple shots as well.
