Offensive Surge Sends Firebirds Past Big Blue For Second Consecutive Win

DECATUR, Ill. - The Carthage Firebirds women's soccer team defeated the Millikin Big Blue 3-0 in Decatur, Illinois on Saturday evening. The team has now won two consecutive contests after besting North Park 1-0 at Art Keller Field last Wednesday.

  • Final Score: Carthage 3, Millikin 0.

How it Happened
 
  • The Firebirds struck first in the 17th minute, as Veronica Walker stepped up into the box to head in a deflected pass from the head of Maggie Thom
  • Carthage led 1-0 going into the half, and each team was only able to muster three shots apiece in the first 45 minutes of play. 
  • Maggie Thom doubled the Firebirds' lead in the 50th minute on a play similar to Walker's goal. Katie Talens sent a pass deep into the box, and Thom capitalized after the ball deflected downward from the crossbar and into her foot space. 
  • Carthage added an insurance goal in the 69th minute, as Lisa Traxel hammered in a free kick from 15 yards away. 

High Flyers
 
  • Junior defender Veronica Walker, from Pingree Grove, Illinois, scored her first goal in a Firebird uniform. 
  • Sophomore defender Maggie Thom scored her second career goal, took three shots, and also picked up an assist against the Big Blue. The assist was the first in Thom's career. 
  • Junior forward/midfielder Katie Talens took a shot and also collected an assist against Millikin. Talens now has two career assists. 
  • Sophomore defender Lisa Traxel scored the first goal of her career in tonight's matchup. 
  • First-year goalkeeper Ainsley Stallworth has shut out two opponents in a row and has now shut out three opponents this season. Opponents have only scored once on Stallworth in the past three games, and she has turned away 16 shots in the process - including four tonight.

  • The Firebirds' final game of the regular season will take place in Elmhurst, Illinois, as the team looks to end the year on a strong note against the Elmhurst Bluejays. The matchup between Elmhurst and Carthage will take place on Wednesday, October 26 beginning at 7 p.m.
