KENOSHA, Wis. — Playing in their first home game of the new season, the No. 10 Carthage College men's volleyball team fell to No. 2 Dominican (Ill.) in a five-set thriller 3-2 on Friday night at Tarble Arena.

Carthage (0-3) controlled a 7-4 margin in the first with a kill from Zach Bulthuis. After Dominican (Ill.) (4-0) made it a two-point game at 17-15, the Firebirds ended the set with an 8-2 run with a final kill from David Markes

Each team battled for control in the second with the Stars taking a 13-10 advantage off a service error. The visitors added a kill moving the score to 21-17 as Dominican (Ill.) held on to win the second 25-20.

The Firebirds rallied in the third going up 10-3 to start with a kill from Gene McNulty. Later, in the set, back-to-back kills from Markes and Schmidt put the Firebirds up 21-11 as the home team won the third 25-16 with a kill from Matt Slivinski

Neither team would gain control in the fourth as the score was tied at 10 then 15 off a Stars bad set. Dominican (Ill.) then added a kill which put the visitors up 19-17. Carthage responded getting within one off a visitors attack error but a Stars kill forced a fifth set 25-23.

The back-and-forth affair continued in the fifth as a Schmidt ace tied it at 10. With the score locked at 14, Carthage tied it twice off a service error and kill from Slivinski but Dominican (Ill.) won the match with a final kill and ace 18-16.
