Carthage Drops Home Matchup with North Central

KENOSHA, Wis. — A fourth-quarter comeback attempt fell just short for the Carthage women's basketball team, as they lost to North Central 61-52 in Tarble Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors were first on the scoreboard, before Lauren Herrmann drew a foul and hit both free throws to make it a 6-2 game. Marianna Morrissey made it 11-8 in favor of the Cardinals (6-10, 3-4 CCIW) with a layup, but the visitors would remain in front after the first quarter, 13-8. The Firebirds (9-8, 4-5 CCIW) would keep pace with North Central during the second frame, but remain behind at the halftime break by seven, 24-17.

The Firebirds got within three early in the third quarter on a bucket from Bridget Barrett, but would ultimately enter the final period down 46-31. With just over six minutes left in the game, a layup from Herrmann began a 12-1 run for the Firebirds, as a three from Margueret Spear and free throw from Lauren Knight set the score at 55-48 with just over a minute left. Carthage would fall by nine however, 61-52.

The Firebirds will be back in action at home Wednesday, January 26 when they host North Park at 7 p.m.
