Men’s Volleyball Takes Stevens to Five Sets

HOBOKEN, NJ. — Playing in their second game of the new season, the No. 1 Carthage College men's volleyball team suffered a loss to Stevens 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Canavan Arena. 

Carthage (0-2) held a 10-6 margin in the first with a kill from Matt Slivinski. Later, back-to-back kills from Daniel Dyner and Slivinski made it 15-8. Stevens (3-0) responded with an 8-3 run shrinking the Firebird lead to 18-16. The Ducks made it a four-point game but a service error and two consecutive service aces from Carter Schmidt won the set for Carthage 25-18. 

Schmidt connected on a block in the second which put the Firebirds ahead 10-7, however, Stevens put together another 10-4 run flipping the score to 17-14. After Slivinski tied it at 24 with a kill, the Ducks won the second off a kill and service ace 26-24. 

It was a back-and-forth third set until the visitors scored five-straight points sparked by kills from Dyner and Slivinski, 13-7. The Firebirds ended the set outscoring Stevens 12-8 for the 25-15 win. 

The Ducks turned the tables in the fourth holding a 14-10 margin with a kill. After Carthage got within two with a block from Dyner and Zach Bulthuis, Stevens forced a fifth set closing with a 10-2 run. 

Each team battled for control in the fifth as the home team controlled a slim 9-7 advantage with a kill. A 7-2 run for Carthage put Firebirds ahead 14-11. The Ducks retaliated tying it at 14 and taking a one-point lead off an attack error. Though Carthage took a one-point lead at 16-15, Stevens collected the final three points for the victory 18-16. 

The Firebirds return home facing No. 3 Dominican (Ill.) on Friday, January 28 at 7 p.m.

Quick Facts

  • Matt Slivinski had a match-high 21 kills and led the Firebirds in aces with five. Slivinski now has 104 career service aces at Carthage which ties him for second all-time in the record books with Griffin Shields (2014-17).
  • Carter Schmidt added 14 kills while Zach Bulthuis had seven. 
  • Bulthuis also had six blocks while Gene McNulty had five. 
  • McNulty also had a match-high 46 assists while Kyle Cohan tallied 15 digs.
