Game Recap: #6 Men's Volleyball |

Firebirds Drop Season Opener to No. 14 NYU

BROOKLYN, NY. — The No. 1 Carthage College men's volleyball team fell to No. 14 New York University 3-1 in the 2022 season opener Friday evening at Brooklyn Athletic Facility.

The first set was tied at four early off a New York (1-0) service error. Carthage (0-1) then went on a quick 5-2 run with a kill from David Markes and a Violets attack error. Markes added another kill and an ace from Carter Schmidt made the score 11-7 for the Firebirds until New York battled back tying it at 11. After the visitors went up 20-16 with a kill from Gene McNulty, New York got within two with a kill and Firebirds attack error. The Violets then cut the deficit to one with an ace but a kill from Peyton Wieter gave Carthage the first set 25-23.

Zach Bulthuis gave the Firebirds a 6-5 score to start the second but New York tied it at seven then took a one-point lead with a kill. The Violets then built their lead to 17-11 off two consecutive blocks. Though Carthage shrank the lead to three with a kill from Schmidt, New York took set two 25-21.

In the third, the Violets began with an 11-4 margin. Carthage cut it to eight with a kill from Schmidt and a home team attack error but a Firebirds service error made it 20-11. Carthage made another run cutting the advantage to 23-17 with a kill from Wieter but New York won the third 25-18.

With momentum on their side, the Violets held a 16-8 margin in the fourth and won by a score of 25-12.

Next up, the Firebirds will play on Saturday, January 22 facing Stevens at 1 p.m. CT.

Head Coach JW Kieckhefer

"It was awesome to get in the gym and compete with this team again. I love this group of guys and how we battled. Credit to NYU, they passed the ball incredibly well today and stayed in system. I thought they won the serve/pass battle and it's tough to win when you are behind there. We have to be better defensively if we want to get to where we want to go this season.

It was awesome to see David Markes contribute in his first collegiate match. He brings so much fire to our group and I'm proud of him for stepping up today.

We will respond to this as one and play Carthage Volleyball tomorrow against Stevens."
