Men’s Basketball Drops Close CCIW Matchup at Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. — The Carthage College men's basketball team fought hard against Millikin in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action but lost 79-76 on Saturday afternoon at Griswold Center. 

Millikin (9-7, 4-3 CCIW) came out with a fast 10-2 start however, Carthage (8-7, 1-5 CCIW) battled back, getting within three with an easy layup from Nemi Ostojic and two free throws from Kyle Czerak. AJ Johnson sank a long jumper, then a steal and layup from Tyler Guest made it 20-16 with 11:05 in the first. The Firebirds tied it at 27, sparked by three consecutive three-pointers from Guest, Garrett Horner, and Crishawn Cook, but the home team regained the lead with a layup which put Millikin ahead 31-29. Fillip Bulatovic added a three, cutting the margin to 40-38 with 2:15 left, then Carthage tied it with a jumper from Garrett Horner out of a timeout. The home team held a slim 42-41 heading into the intermission. 

The score was locked at 43 early on until the Firebirds put together a 13-2 run changing the score to 56-45 in the second half. The Big Blue retaliated with a 7-0 run making it a six-point game until a driving layup from Antuan Nesbitt put Carthage up eight. Later, Millikin connected on a breakaway layup making it 68-64, until Cook sank a layup on the next possession. The home team then got it to two with a hook shot with 5:19 left in regulation and later tied it at 68. Millikin regained control with a 6-2 run making it 74-70 with under three minutes to play. With 2:03 remaining, Johnson hit another three, putting the Firebirds up one, but the home team hit a turnaround jump shot for a 76-73 score. A lone free throw from Cook narrowed the gap to two then Horner made a driving layup tying it at 76. On the next possession, a layup and free throw with three seconds left for Millikin won the game 79-76. 

Carthage returns home facing North Central (Ill.) on Saturday, January 22 at 4 p.m.

"We started off the second half with a great run to get us some separation. Need to do a better job finishing games which starts on the defensive end of the floor. We put them to the free throw line way too much in the last 10 minutes which allowed them to come back in the game."
