Firebirds Take CCIW Win over Carroll 78-73

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men's basketball team started the 2022 portion of the season with a 78-73 win over the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) opponent Carroll (Wis.) on Wednesday afternoon at Van Male Field House.

Carthage (8-6, 1-4 CCIW) began with a 14-5 margin with a pair of jumpers from Nemi Ostojic. Caroll (Wis.) (4-11, 0-6 CCIW) then responded with a 12-5 run cutting the deficit to 19-17. Later, a driving layup from Crishawn Cook made it a six-point game then, another layup this time from Kyle Czerak put the Firebirds ahead 30-25. Following a lone Pioneer free throw, Cook added a jumper which made it 34-30 with 40 seconds remaining in the half as Carthage held a 34-32 lead heading into the halftime break.

Carroll (Wis.) flipped the score with an 11-3 run at the start of the second until seven-straight points from Kyle Kostes made it 45-44. After a Garrett Horner free throw, Fillip Bulatovic added a layup of his own putting the Firebirds back in front 47-45. With the score even at 47, the home team regained control 55-51 with a bucket at the 7:45 mark. Horner put in seven consecutive points which made it a three-point game 63-60 with 5:25 left. After Ostojic put in a free throw, Bulatovic banked in a shot which tied it at 63. The Pioneers then converted a three-point play which put them back in control until Czerak tied it the following possession. A single free throw from Horner gave the Firebirds a one-point advantage then, after a defensive stop, Cook nailed a pull-up jumper which made it 71-68 in favor of the visitors with 41 seconds left. Cook then sank the two free throws extending the Carthage lead to 73-68. Though Caroll (Wis.) made it a two-point game with a layup, free throws from Czerak and Horner sealed the victory for the 78-73 win.

Carthage stays on the road facing Millikin on Saturday, January 15 beginning at 4 p.m.

Head Coach Steve Djurickovic

""We showed a ton of resiliency in the 2nd half today to come out with a tough road win. Carroll is so difficult to prepare for because they do such a great job of taking you out of your rhythm by mixing up their defenses. Nemi Ostojic was terrific today. Always plays with a high motor and is starting to finish at a high percentage around the basket!

This whole year we have been discussing free throw shooting, especially late in games, and today we made some clutch free throws when it mattered most!

Super proud of this group! Never easy to win on the road in the CCIW. Get another opportunity on Saturday at Millikin, who is playing really well. ""
