Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Carthage Takes Down St. Norbert with 4-0 Win

KENOSHA, Wis. — Another strong showing from the Carthage men's soccer team this weekend led to a victory, as the Firebirds defeated St. Norbert College 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Art Keller Field.

Carthage (2-0-1) took the lead 15 minutes into the match on a strong counter. After a St. Norbert (1-1-1) corner, the Firebirds took the ball back down the field, with Johnny Casares assisting Silvio Gkizas on a boot that slipped by the keeper. Moments later, Colin Iverson dished a ball up to Mickey Reilly, who found Collin Moran for the goal to give the home team a comfortable lead.

Midway through the second period, Trevor Molitor gathered a ball and broke away from the St. Norbert defense, firing a shot that bounced off the goalkeeper, before Noah Smeja found the rebound to the right of the goal and connected with the back of the net. Once again, as the match wound down to its end, Smeja would score a second time to further lock in the Firebird victory.

With a pair of wins in the "Battle on the Border" tournament, Carthage accumulated 12 total points to place first among the five teams.

Carthage heads back out on the road next weekend for the Michigan Invite, taking on Calvin College on Friday, September 10 at 5 p.m. in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"It's always fun playing hyper-competitive teams like St Norbert. I mean, we strategically like to stack the best teams on our schedule annually. Really playing those teams who have a great shot at winning their leagues or who will be playing in November, which ultimately helps us benchmark our successes and results."

"Truthfully, we didn't play all that well today, and found different and unique ways to win. Scoring five goals in two games, on the heels of three games in five days, I tell you we still struggled in the final third. We never want to apologize for winning our Battle on the Border Tournament because it is one of the most deep, and far reaching events in soccer."

"Defense and clean sheets were the story lines, with timely and exciting goals sprinkled around. We have to find a way to get fresh. We're headed out to play two of the best teams in the Michigan league, with both vying for top spots in the county."
