Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Takes First Loss of the Season

HOLLAND, Mich. — After grabbing a quick second-half lead, the Carthage men's soccer team ended up dropping a tough road match at Hope College on Friday evening at Van Andel Soccer Stadium, in game one of the Michigan Invite.

Each team's defenses shined in the first half, as the Firebirds (2-1-1) backs allowed just three shots from the Flying Dutchmen (1-1-1), while Christian Lekki totaled three first-period saves. Within the first minute of the second half, Carthage drew a penalty in the box which allowed Danny Eloyza to convert on a penalty kick, giving the road team a 1-0 advantage.

However, Hope would respond in the 54th minute, before taking a lead in the 72nd they would hold until the final whistle.

Up next, the Firebirds will take on Calvin, the third-ranked team in the national preseason polls, in their second match of the Michigan Invite, traveling to Grand Rapids for a 6 p.m. ET contest tomorrow, September 11.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"You play with fire, you are bound to get burned, and that's what happened today. More than the long travel and being on the road and playing a good team, it was not taking care of our opportunities when presented. This one was ours for the taking."

"Statistically we got everything we wanted for about 70 minutes into the game. We out-shot them, significantly out cornered them, and they were chasing in bunches. We started the second half where we left off and got on the board. Then, we collectively took the foot off the gas and thought we had it. That's on me. We were not ready to handle this position and with a young group it showed in the waning portion of the match."

"We got great games from Nick Renfro, Colin Moran and Colin Iverson, but just couldn't cash in. We will keep getting better. No time to feel sorry for ourselves, we have another top five opponent in Calvin tomorrow."

Quick Facts

  • Danny Eloyza scored his first goal of the season on a PK, his second conversion in as many attempts during his collegiate career.
  • Christian Lekki posted a season-best five saves on the day.
  • Carthage posted 11 shots compared to eight from Hope today, and is out-shooting their opponents 59-42 on the season so far.
