Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Firebirds Earn First Victory of the Season

KENOSHA, Wis. — In their first game at home, the Carthage men's soccer team defended Art Keller Field with a 1-0 win over Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday afternoon.

The two teams battled throughout the first half, with the Firebirds (1-0-1) drawing seven fouls and a pair of yellow cards in the first 45-minute period. While Carthage out-shot the Cowboys (0-2) nine to two, neither team was able to jump on the scoreboard with a goal.

After an early corner kick in the second half for Carthage, the visiting team made an attempt to clear it. However, the Firebirds quickly countered back as Jhovany Guadarrama shot a quick pass to Omar Cordova down the right side. Cordova sent a lob into the box that found Mickey Reilly to put the Firebirds up 1-0. The Carthage defense stood strong for the rest of the match, securing the win in their season home-opener.

The Firebirds will be back in action tomorrow, September 5 when they host St. Norbert College at 1 p.m. at Art Keller Field.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"This was a textbook result today, despite a bit of a trap game coming off the emotions of an epic battle in Texas a couple of days ago. Give a lot of credit to the Texas teams, as all of them battle to the last whistle. We played all the top ones this past week, in a real contest or exhibition."

"Our back five or six were solid today. I can't say enough about Omar, Collin, Colin, Cesar, Jhovanny, and our keeper Lekki. They showed, in their youth, they can hold teams at bay, especially in physical matches like this. No time to rest as we have another regional power in St. Norberts coming to town with a day of rest in their favor."
